Kaal Sarp Dosh: What It Is, Its 12 Types, and Why You Needn't Panic
What is Kaal Sarp dosh? How it is checked, its 12 named types, why classical texts don't mention it, and why costly pujas for it aren't necessary.

Quick answer: Kaal Sarp dosh (or Kaal Sarp yoga) is said to exist when all seven planets, Sun to Saturn, sit on one side of the Rahu–Ketu axis in your kundli. Astrologers name 12 types depending on where Rahu falls. It is not described in the major classical texts such as Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, and became popular much later. It is fairly common, heavily marketed for expensive pujas, and many traditional astrologers give it little weight.
What is Kaal Sarp dosh?
Kaal means time (and also death), and sarp means serpent. Rahu is pictured as the serpent's head and Ketu as its tail. Rahu and Ketu are always exactly opposite each other, so they split the kundli into two halves. When the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn all fall in one half, the chart is said to be "swallowed" by the serpent. That is Kaal Sarp dosh.
People who believe in it say it brings delays, obstacles and a feeling that effort isn't rewarded, especially during Rahu or Ketu periods.
How is Kaal Sarp dosh checked?
- Make a free kundli and find Rahu and Ketu.
- Trace one half of the chart from Rahu to Ketu, and the other half from Ketu back to Rahu.
- If all seven planets sit in one half, the basic condition is met.
Astrologers disagree on the details, so two of them can grade the same chart differently:
- Full or partial. Some count it only when every planet is strictly inside. Others call it "partial" (ardh) Kaal Sarp when one planet is outside or sits right with Rahu or Ketu.
- Direction. Some say it applies only when planets are on the side running from Rahu towards Ketu. When they are on the other side, some call it Kaal Amrit yoga and treat it differently.
- Degrees. Some check whether a planet in Rahu's or Ketu's sign is actually beyond them by degree.
If someone tells you that you have it, ask which version of the rule they used.
What are the 12 types of Kaal Sarp dosh?
The types are named after mythological serpents and depend on which house Rahu occupies (Ketu is always in the opposite house).
| Rahu in house | Name |
|---|---|
| 1st | Anant |
| 2nd | Kulik |
| 3rd | Vasuki |
| 4th | Shankhpal |
| 5th | Padma |
| 6th | Mahapadma |
| 7th | Takshak |
| 8th | Karkotak |
| 9th | Shankhachud |
| 10th | Ghatak |
| 11th | Vishdhar |
| 12th | Sheshnag |
Spellings vary between books and websites. Each type is linked with the themes of the houses Rahu and Ketu sit in, read the same way as any placement when you read your kundli.
Is Kaal Sarp dosh in the classical texts?
This is the most important point, and it is worth stating carefully. Kaal Sarp dosh, in the form described above, is not found in the major classical works of Vedic astrology: Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Brihat Jataka, Saravali, Phaladeepika or Jataka Parijata. Those texts discuss many yogas and doshas in detail, but not this one.
Some classical works do mention yogas named after serpents (for example, a sarpa yoga involving malefic planets in the kendras), but that is a different combination and does not depend on the Rahu–Ketu axis. Kaal Sarp dosh as it is practised today appears to have been popularised in the 20th century, through later writers and the puja tradition at certain temples. Supporters argue it is based on older oral knowledge. There is no agreed classical source for it.
That doesn't settle whether it "works", since that is a question of belief, but it does mean it shouldn't be presented as ancient, undisputed shastra. More on this in real Vedic astrology.
How common is Kaal Sarp dosh?
More common than most people expect. Rahu, Ketu, Saturn and Jupiter move slowly, and the Sun, Mercury and Venus always stay close together. So there are stretches of weeks or months when the slow planets fall on one side of the axis, and almost everyone born during that time gets the yoga whenever the Moon and Mars also fall on that side. A label shared by a large share of everyone born in a given season can't be a rare personal curse.
Why is Kaal Sarp dosh marketed so heavily?
Because it is easy to detect, sounds frightening, and is usually paired with a specific, expensive fix: a Kaal Sarp shanti puja, sometimes said to work only at a particular temple or on particular dates. Online services often bundle it with gemstones or "energised" yantras.
Simple remedies are commonly suggested too, such as reciting the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra or worshipping Shiva, and they cost nothing. If a reading uses Kaal Sarp dosh to push you towards an urgent, costly puja, treat that as a red flag. See how to pick a trustworthy kundli service.
How should you think about it calmly?
- It is one factor, not the whole chart. Even astrologers who use it read it alongside the lagna, house lords and the running dasha.
- Many successful people have it. Its supporters say so themselves, often describing it as a yoga that brings struggle first and rise later.
- Astrology is a belief system. There is no scientific evidence that Kaal Sarp dosh, or any planetary placement, causes life events. See is astrology accurate?
- Don't let it drive big decisions. Marriage, career and health choices deserve real-world thinking first.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if I have Kaal Sarp dosh?
Make a free kundli and check whether all seven planets, Sun to Saturn, fall on one side of the line joining Rahu and Ketu. Many kundli apps flag it automatically, though they may use different rules for partial cases.
Is Kaal Sarp dosh mentioned in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra?
No. It does not appear in BPHS or the other major classical texts. It is a later, popular concept.
Does Kaal Sarp dosh affect marriage?
Some astrologers link it with delays in marriage, especially when Rahu or Ketu sits in the 1st or 7th house. Others don't use it at all. For marriage, astrologers usually give far more weight to kundli matching and the 7th house.
Is a Kaal Sarp puja necessary?
No. Even within traditional astrology, many astrologers don't treat it as necessary. If you want to do something for peace of mind, simple prayers and charity are commonly suggested and cost little.
