Vimshottari Dasha: Mahadasha, Antardasha and How to Find Yours
How Vimshottari dasha works: the 120-year cycle, each planet's mahadasha length, how your starting dasha is set at birth, and how to read your current one.

Quick answer: Vimshottari dasha is the main timing system in Vedic astrology. It divides a 120-year cycle among nine planets in a fixed order: Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17 years. Each period is a mahadasha, split into nine antardashas. Your first dasha is set by the nakshatra the Moon was in at your birth. Any free kundli lists your dasha dates.
What is a dasha?
A dasha is a period of time ruled by one planet. Vedic astrology says a planet gives the results promised by its position in your chart mainly during its own period. So the same kundli is read differently at different ages: the chart shows what is possible, and the dasha is said to show when.
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra describes many dasha systems, but Vimshottari (vimshottari means "one hundred and twenty") is by far the most widely used.
What are mahadasha and antardasha?
- Mahadasha is the main period, ruled by one planet for 6 to 20 years.
- Antardasha (or bhukti) is a sub-period inside it. Each mahadasha has nine antardashas, starting with the mahadasha planet itself and then following the same order.
- Pratyantar dasha is a further sub-period inside each antardasha. Some software goes even deeper.
A period is usually written as "Jupiter–Saturn", meaning Jupiter mahadasha, Saturn antardasha.
How long is each planet's mahadasha?
The order never changes. After Mercury the cycle returns to Ketu.
| Order | Planet | Mahadasha length |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ketu | 7 years |
| 2 | Venus (Shukra) | 20 years |
| 3 | Sun (Surya) | 6 years |
| 4 | Moon (Chandra) | 10 years |
| 5 | Mars (Mangal) | 7 years |
| 6 | Rahu | 18 years |
| 7 | Jupiter (Guru) | 16 years |
| 8 | Saturn (Shani) | 19 years |
| 9 | Mercury (Budh) | 17 years |
| Total | 120 years |
Because the full cycle is 120 years and you start partway through one period, nobody lives through all nine mahadashas.
How long is an antardasha?
Each antardasha takes the same share of the mahadasha as its planet's share of 120 years. The formula is:
Antardasha length = (mahadasha years × antardasha planet's years) ÷ 120
For example, Saturn antardasha within Jupiter mahadasha is 16 × 19 ÷ 120 = about 2 years 6 months. The shortest is Sun–Sun at about 3 months 18 days. The longest is Venus–Venus at 3 years 4 months.
How is your starting dasha decided?
From the Moon's nakshatra at birth. Each of the 27 nakshatras is ruled by one of the nine dasha planets, three nakshatras each:
| Dasha planet | Nakshatras it rules |
|---|---|
| Ketu | Ashwini, Magha, Mula |
| Venus | Bharani, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha |
| Sun | Krittika, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha |
| Moon | Rohini, Hasta, Shravana |
| Mars | Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishta |
| Rahu | Ardra, Swati, Shatabhisha |
| Jupiter | Punarvasu, Vishakha, Purva Bhadrapada |
| Saturn | Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada |
| Mercury | Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Revati |
Your first mahadasha belongs to the lord of your birth nakshatra. How much of it is left depends on how far the Moon had travelled through that nakshatra. If the Moon was halfway through Rohini (a Moon-ruled nakshatra), half of the 10-year Moon dasha remains, so you start with about 5 years of Moon mahadasha, then move on to Mars, Rahu and so on.
This is why an accurate birth time matters. The Moon moves about 13° a day, so even an hour's error can shift every dasha date by months.
How do you read your current dasha on a free kundli?
- Make a free kundli with your exact date, time and place of birth.
- Find the section called Vimshottari dasha, mahadasha or dasha periods. It lists each mahadasha with start and end dates.
- Open the current mahadasha to see its antardashas and find the one covering today's date.
- Note the two planets, say Venus–Jupiter. Then look at where they sit in your chart, which houses they rule, and how strong they are. That is where the chart says the action is now. Our guide on how to read your kundli explains houses and lords.
What are the limits of dasha predictions?
- Same planet, different results. A Saturn mahadasha is not "bad" in itself. Astrologers judge it by Saturn's house, sign and strength in your chart, so it can be read as a period of hard work and steady gains. The same goes for the much-feared Rahu dasha.
- Small differences between calculators. Software can differ in ayanamsa and in how it counts a year (365.25 days or 360), so dates may vary by days or weeks.
- Birth time errors shift everything, as above.
- Interpretation varies. Two astrologers can read the same Venus–Jupiter period quite differently.
- It is a belief system. There is no scientific evidence that dashas predict life events. Read them as one traditional lens, not a schedule your life must follow. See is astrology accurate?
Treat any reading that announces a "dangerous" dasha and then sells an expensive puja or gemstone with suspicion. Simple prayers and charity are the remedies commonly suggested, and they cost little.
Frequently asked questions
Which mahadasha is the best?
None is good or bad on its own. A planet's dasha is judged by its placement and strength in your own chart. Jupiter and Venus are popularly seen as pleasant, but a weak Jupiter can give mixed results and a well-placed Saturn can give excellent ones.
How do I know which mahadasha I am in?
Make a free kundli with your exact birth time and open the Vimshottari dasha table. Find the mahadasha whose start and end dates cover today.
What is the difference between mahadasha and antardasha?
Mahadasha is the main period of 6 to 20 years ruled by one planet. Antardasha is one of its nine sub-periods, which colours the mahadasha with a second planet's themes.
Why is my dasha different on two apps?
Usually because of a different birth time, place or ayanamsa setting, or a different year length in the calculation. Check that the inputs match first.
Does dasha work with Sade Sati?
Astrologers read them together. Sade Sati is a transit that applies to everyone with the same Moon sign, while dasha is personal to your chart, so it is often said to decide how strongly a transit is felt.
