A twelve-part zodiac wheel with a line of stars across it

Quick answer: Real Vedic astrology (jyotish) uses the sidereal zodiac, corrected by an ayanamsa (Lahiri is India's standard, about 24° in 2026). It reads your chart from the lagna and Moon sign, uses the 27 nakshatras, and times life phases with Vimshottari dasha. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac and centres on your Sun sign. If a reading never mentions your lagna, nakshatra or dasha, it isn't really Vedic.

What is Vedic astrology?

Vedic astrology, or jyotish, is the traditional astrology of India. Its main rules come from classical texts such as Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Saravali, Phaladeepika and Jataka Parijata. It uses nine grahas: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, and the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu.

What makes Vedic astrology different from Western astrology?

Vedic (jyotish) Western
Zodiac Sidereal, fixed to the stars Tropical, fixed to the seasons
Correction Ayanamsa, Lahiri ≈ 24° in 2026 None
Main sign Lagna and Moon sign (rashi) Sun sign
Lunar mansions 27 nakshatras Not used
Timing method Vimshottari dasha (120-year cycle) Transits and progressions
Planets Nine grahas, including Rahu and Ketu Includes Uranus, Neptune, Pluto
Divisional charts Yes (D9 navamsa, D10 and more) Not used

Because of the ayanamsa, most people's Vedic sign is one sign earlier than their Western sign. A Western Aries is often a Vedic Pisces.

What is the sidereal zodiac and ayanamsa?

The Earth's axis wobbles slowly (precession), so the point where the Sun crosses the equator in spring drifts backwards against the stars by about 1° every 72 years. Western astrology starts Aries at that seasonal point. Vedic astrology starts Aries against the fixed stars.

The gap between the two is the ayanamsa. India's Calendar Reform Committee (1955) adopted the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, and it remains the default for Indian astrologers and almost every Indian kundli app. Other ayanamsas exist, such as Raman and KP, but they differ by only a small amount.

What are nakshatras?

The zodiac is divided into 27 nakshatras of 13°20' each, from Ashwini to Revati. Your birth nakshatra is where the Moon was when you were born. It sets the starting point of your dasha, is used in kundli matching, and is traditionally used to choose the first letter of a baby's name.

What is Vimshottari dasha?

Vimshottari is a 120-year cycle of planetary periods:

Planet Years Planet Years
Ketu 7 Rahu 18
Venus 20 Jupiter 16
Sun 6 Saturn 19
Moon 10 Mercury 17
Mars 7 Total 120

Which period you start in depends on your birth nakshatra, and how much of it is left depends on how far the Moon had travelled through that nakshatra. Each mahadasha divides into antardashas. A Vedic astrologer almost always starts by asking which dasha you are in, because that is the main timing tool.

How can I tell if a reading is really Vedic?

A real Vedic reading:

  • Asks for your exact birth time and place.
  • Mentions your lagna, Moon sign and nakshatra.
  • Refers to houses ("your 7th house of marriage") and dashas ("you are in Jupiter–Saturn").
  • Uses a North or South Indian chart, not a Western circle chart.
  • Gives your sign as the Vedic sign, often one before your Western Sun sign.

A fake or generic reading talks only about your Sun sign, gives the same text to everyone born in a month, or skips straight to selling a remedy.

Is Vedic astrology scientific?

Vedic astrology uses real astronomy to calculate the chart. Planetary positions, the ayanamsa and dashas are precise arithmetic. Its interpretations have not been shown to work in controlled scientific tests. Most people treat it as a cultural and spiritual tradition and a lens for reflection, which is the healthiest way to use it. More in is astrology accurate?

Frequently asked questions

Is Vedic astrology more accurate than Western astrology?

They measure the zodiac differently, so the signs differ. Neither has been shown to predict events in scientific tests. Many people in India prefer Vedic astrology for its detailed timing through dashas.

Why is my Vedic sign different from my Western sign?

Vedic astrology subtracts the ayanamsa (about 24°), which moves most placements back by one sign. Your Sun might be in Aries in Western astrology and in Pisces in Vedic.

What is the best ayanamsa?

Lahiri is the official Indian standard and the one most astrologers and apps use. Use it unless you follow a specific school such as KP.

Do I need a birth time for Vedic astrology?

For the lagna and houses, yes. Without a birth time you can still work from your Moon sign, but the nakshatra and dasha may be uncertain.
