Quick answer: A trustworthy kundli service asks for your exact birth date, time and place, says which ayanamsa it uses (Lahiri is the Indian standard), shows the lagna, nakshatra and current dasha clearly, and gives the basic chart free or at a stated price. It shows per-minute or per-report prices before you pay, has a written refund policy, and never pressures you into expensive remedies through fear.

1. Does it ask for your exact birth time and place?

A kundli is a map of the sky at the minute and place you were born. The ascendant (lagna) changes sign roughly every two hours, and the house positions change with it. A service that only asks for your date of birth can tell you your sun sign, not your kundli.

Trustworthy: asks for date, time (to the minute) and town of birth, and looks up its latitude and longitude. Red flag: "Enter your date of birth to get your full kundli."

2. Does it say how the chart is calculated?

Vedic charts use the sidereal zodiac, which needs an ayanamsa correction of about 24° in 2026. The Government of India adopted the Lahiri ayanamsa after the 1955 Calendar Reform Committee, and most Indian astrologers use it. A serious service tells you which ayanamsa and house system it uses, or at least defaults to Lahiri.

Our explainer on real Vedic astrology shows how to check this in under a minute.

3. Does the chart show the basics clearly?

Any real kundli should show, without paying:

  • Lagna (ascendant) and its sign
  • Rashi (Moon sign) and nakshatra (birth star)
  • The nine grahas with signs and houses
  • Vimshottari dasha: which mahadasha and antardasha you are in, with dates

If the free result is a paragraph of generic personality text with no chart, you are looking at marketing, not a kundli.

4. Are prices shown before you start?

Look for the exact price per minute, per report or per month before you enter payment details. Check whether GST (18%) is included or added on top. Marketplace apps bill per minute, so a long chat adds up. See what talking to an astrologer online really costs.

5. Is there a written refund policy?

A trustworthy service publishes its refund and cancellation terms. For subscriptions, it should say how to cancel and that you will be told before each renewal. Under RBI rules for recurring card and UPI mandates, Indian payment providers must notify you before an automatic debit.

6. Does it avoid fear-selling?

The biggest warning sign in Indian astrology is a reading that ends in panic and a price: "Your Shani is very bad, book this ₹11,000 puja today." Genuine astrologers describe difficult periods calmly and suggest simple, low-cost remedies such as mantra, charity or fasting. Read our guides to Sade Sati and Manglik dosha. Both are routinely used to scare people.

7. Does it respect your privacy?

Your birth details, phone number and questions about love or health are sensitive. Check that the service has a privacy policy, says who processes your data, and lets you delete your account. India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 gives you the right to ask for your data to be erased.

8. Is it honest about what astrology can and cannot do?

A trustworthy service will not promise guaranteed results, exact dates for marriage or a job, or medical cures. It should send you to a doctor, lawyer or counsellor where that is the right help.

9. Do independent reviews match its claims?

Read recent Play Store reviews sorted by "most recent", not "most relevant", and look for patterns: unexpected charges, refund delays, astrologers who disappear mid-chat. One angry review means little. Twenty saying the same thing means a lot.

Frequently asked questions

Which kundli service is most accurate in India?

For the chart itself, any service using a proper astronomical calculation with the Lahiri ayanamsa and your exact birth time gives the same positions. Differences in "accuracy" usually come from a wrong birth time or a different ayanamsa, not the brand.

Should I pay for a kundli?

You don't need to pay for the chart. AstroSage and most apps calculate it free. You may choose to pay for interpretation, by a written report, a live astrologer or an AI chat.

How do I know if an online astrologer is genuine?

They ask for exact birth details, refer to specific houses, planets and dasha periods in your chart, admit uncertainty, and don't push urgent paid remedies. Anyone who makes you afraid and then sells you the cure is not genuine.

What should I do if an astrology app overcharged me?

First raise a ticket with the app and keep screenshots of the rate and chat duration. If it isn't resolved, contact the National Consumer Helpline on 1915, or file a complaint on the government's e-Jagriti consumer portal.
