Sun Sign vs Moon Sign vs Lagna: Which One Is Really Yours?
Why your Western sun sign and Indian rashi differ, what the 24° ayanamsa does, and when Vedic astrology uses your Moon sign, Sun sign or lagna.

Quick answer: Your Western sun sign is where the Sun was at birth on the tropical zodiac. Your Indian rashi is where the Moon was, on the sidereal zodiac. Your lagna is the sign rising in the east at your birth time. They are three different things, so they are often three different signs. The two zodiacs are currently about 24° apart (the ayanamsa), which is why most people's Vedic sun sign falls one sign earlier than their Western one.
What are sun sign, moon sign and lagna?
- Sun sign is the sign the Sun was in when you were born. It is what newspaper horoscopes in the West mean by "your sign". Because the Sun moves about 1° a day, it depends almost entirely on your birth date.
- Moon sign (chandra rashi, or just "rashi") is the sign the Moon was in. In Indian astrology this is "your rashi". The Moon changes sign about every 2¼ days, so you need your birth time to be sure. See how to find your rashi.
- Lagna (ascendant) is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. The rising sign changes roughly every two hours, so it needs an accurate time and place. It becomes the 1st house of your kundli.
Why is my Western sign different from my Indian sign?
There are two separate reasons, and people often mix them up.
1. Different planet. Western horoscopes use the Sun. Indian rashifal uses the Moon. Your Sun and Moon can be in any two signs, so your Western "Leo" and your Indian rashi may have nothing to do with each other.
2. Different zodiac. Even for the same planet, the two systems measure the signs from different starting points:
- The tropical zodiac (Western) starts Aries at the March equinox, so it is tied to the seasons.
- The sidereal zodiac (Vedic) is tied to the fixed stars. Its signs line up with the actual star groups behind them.
Because of the slow wobble of the Earth's axis (precession of the equinoxes), the equinox point drifts backwards against the stars by about 1° every 72 years. Over many centuries the two zodiacs have drifted roughly 24° apart. That gap is called the ayanamsa.
What is ayanamsa, and which one does India use?
The ayanamsa is the number you subtract from a tropical position to get a sidereal one. Astrologers disagree slightly on the exact value, so there are several versions. Most Indian software and panchangs use the Lahiri (also called Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, which is about 24° in 2026. Others, like Raman or KP, differ from it by about a degree or less.
This is also why a free kundli usually has an ayanamsa setting. If two calculators disagree, check that first. More in real Vedic astrology.
Why does my sign shift back by one?
Each sign is 30° wide and the ayanamsa is about 24°. So if your Sun was in the first 24° or so of a tropical sign, it falls in the previous sign on the sidereal zodiac. Only if it was in the last 6° or so does it stay in the same sign.
In date terms, the sidereal Sun enters each sign around the 14th to 17th of the month, roughly three weeks after the Western dates. That is why Makar Sankranti falls around 14 January, not around 21 December when the tropical Sun enters Capricorn.
| Western sun sign (tropical) | Born roughly | Vedic sun sign (sidereal) |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 21 Mar – 13 Apr | Meen (Pisces) |
| Aries | 14 Apr – 19 Apr | Mesh (Aries) |
| Leo | 23 Jul – 16 Aug | Kark (Cancer) |
| Leo | 17 Aug – 22 Aug | Simha (Leo) |
Dates shift by a day or so between years. A kundli gives your exact positions.
Remember, this shift is about the Sun. Your Indian rashi is the Moon's sign, which is a different calculation altogether.
Which one does Indian astrology use for what?
| Sun sign | Moon sign (rashi) | Lagna (ascendant) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Based on | Sun's position | Moon's position | Sign rising in the east |
| Zodiac in Vedic use | Sidereal | Sidereal | Sidereal |
| Changes about every | 30 days | 2¼ days | 2 hours |
| What you need | Birth date | Date and time | Exact time and place |
| Main use in India | Solar months, Sankranti, Sun's strength in the chart | Rashifal, gochar (transits), Sade Sati, naming, guna milan | Houses, the layout of the whole kundli |
In practice:
- Rashi is used for daily and yearly horoscopes and gochar: transits like Saturn's or Jupiter's are read by counting from your Moon sign. Your nakshatra, which sets your dasha, also comes from the Moon. See how to find your nakshatra.
- Lagna is used to set the 12 houses, so it decides which house each planet occupies and rules. Our guide on how to read your kundli starts there.
- Sun sign matters less in Indian astrology than in Western, though the Sun's placement is still read like any other planet's.
Which one is my "real" sign?
It depends on the system you follow. In Western astrology, your sun sign. In Indian astrology, most people mean their rashi, and astrologers give the lagna equal weight. Neither zodiac is "correct" in a scientific sense: they are two conventions with different starting points. And astrology is a belief system. There is no scientific evidence that any of these signs shapes personality or events. See is astrology accurate?
Frequently asked questions
Is the Western zodiac wrong because of precession?
Not by its own rules. The tropical zodiac was defined by the seasons, not the stars, so it is consistent with itself. It just measures something different from the sidereal zodiac.
Can my sun sign and moon sign be the same?
Yes. If the Sun and Moon were in the same sign at your birth, around the new moon, they match. For most people they differ.
Which sign should I read in an Indian rashifal?
Your Moon sign (rashi). If you don't know it, make a free kundli with your birth date, time and place.
Why is my lagna different from my rashi?
The lagna depends on the time of day you were born, and the rashi depends on where the Moon was. They are independent, so they often differ.
