Nadi Dosha in Kundli Matching: Meaning, Cancellation and How Worried to Be

What is Nadi dosha in kundli matching? How Adi, Madhya and Antya nadi work, when the 8-point Nadi koota scores zero, and the common cancellations.

Two kundli charts linked by three flowing lines for the three nadis

Quick answer: Nadi is the last and heaviest of the eight kootas in guna milan, worth 8 of the 36 points. Every nakshatra belongs to one of three nadis: Adi, Madhya or Antya. If the bride's and groom's Moon nakshatras fall in the same nadi, Nadi koota scores 0 and that is called Nadi dosha. Traditional texts list cancellations, such as the same Moon sign with different nakshatras, and schools differ on which ones apply. It is worth checking properly, not panicking about.

What is Nadi dosha?

In kundli matching, the Ashtakoota system compares the two Moon nakshatras through eight checks. The eighth, Nadi koota, carries the most points: 8 out of 36.

The scoring is all or nothing:

  • Different nadis: 8 points.
  • Same nadi: 0 points. This is Nadi dosha.

Tradition links the three nadis with the three Ayurvedic doshas (vata, pitta and kapha), and says that two people of the same nadi may face problems with health or children. That is the belief behind the rule. It is a traditional idea, not a medical finding.

Which nakshatras belong to which nadi?

The 27 nakshatras are split evenly, nine to each nadi, in a repeating zig-zag order.

Nadi Linked with Nakshatras
Adi (Aadya) Vata Ashwini, Ardra, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Mula, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada
Madhya Pitta Bharani, Mrigashira, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha, Dhanishta, Uttara Bhadrapada
Antya Kapha Krittika, Rohini, Ashlesha, Magha, Swati, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Revati

How common is Nadi dosha?

With three nadis split evenly, a random pair shares a nadi about one time in three. So Nadi dosha is ordinary, not rare. It shows up in a lot of otherwise good matches, which is one reason the cancellations matter so much.

When is Nadi dosha cancelled?

Traditional sources list several exceptions (parihara). The ones you will see most often:

  • Same Moon sign, different nakshatras. Both Moons are in the same rashi, but in different nakshatras.
  • Same nakshatra, different Moon signs. This is only possible for nakshatras that straddle two signs, such as Krittika, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Dhanishta and Purva Bhadrapada.
  • Same nakshatra, different padas (quarters). Many traditions accept this; some do not, or accept it only for certain nakshatras.
  • Same or friendly Moon-sign lords. Several texts and many practising astrologers treat this as easing the dosha.

Schools and regional traditions disagree on the exact list. Some astrologers also say a same-nakshatra, same-pada match is the most serious form and is not cancelled. Before accepting or rejecting a match, ask which exceptions the astrologer is applying and from which tradition.

Some calculators show an "adjusted" score that restores the 8 points when an exception applies. Others show the raw 0 and leave the judgement to you. Check which one you are looking at. See what your gun milan score really means for more on this.

Does Nadi dosha mean the marriage will fail?

No. Even within astrology, Nadi dosha is one factor among many. A careful astrologer also looks at:

  • the rest of the guna score and whether Bhakoot dosha is also present,
  • Manglik status of both charts,
  • the 7th house, its lord, Venus and Jupiter,
  • the navamsa chart and the running dashas.

Outside astrology, there is no scientific evidence that couples who share a nadi have worse health or fertility. Astrology is a belief system, and how much weight to give it is your family's choice. Our guide on whether astrology is accurate covers the evidence honestly.

What about Nadi dosha remedies?

Traditional suggestions include Mahamrityunjaya mantra recitation, charity, and in some families a simple puja. None of these needs to be expensive. If someone tells you a match is doomed unless you pay for an urgent, costly "Nadi dosha nivaran" puja, treat that as a sales pitch and get a second opinion.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check Nadi dosha?

Find both partners' Moon nakshatras from their kundlis and look them up in the table above. If both fall in the same nadi (Adi, Madhya or Antya), Nadi koota scores 0 and Nadi dosha is present before exceptions are checked.

Is Nadi dosha cancelled if both have the same rashi?

Yes, in most traditions, as long as the nakshatras are different. Same rashi with different nakshatras is one of the most widely cited cancellations.

Is Nadi dosha cancelled if both have the same nakshatra?

It depends. If the Moon signs differ, or the padas differ, many traditions cancel it. If the nakshatra and pada are both the same, most astrologers treat it as uncancelled.

Can we marry with Nadi dosha?

Many couples do. Astrologers often approve the match when a cancellation applies or the rest of both charts is strong. In the end it is a decision for the couple and their families, not a verdict from a table.

Is Nadi dosha the same as Bhakoot dosha?

No. Nadi dosha comes from the nakshatras sharing a nadi (8 points). Bhakoot dosha comes from the distance between the two Moon signs (7 points). They are separate checks, though both are among the most discussed.
