What Your Gun Milan Score Really Means (18, 24, 28 or 36 out of 36)

Is 18 gunas enough for marriage? What each gun milan score means, how Nadi and Bhakoot dosha work, their exceptions, and what to do with a low score.

Two kundli charts side by side with a highlighted centre point

Quick answer: In guna milan, 18 out of 36 is the traditional minimum, 18–24 is acceptable, 25–32 is good and 33–36 is excellent. The score alone doesn't decide a match. A high score with Nadi dosha (0 of 8) or Bhakoot dosha (0 of 7) is often flagged, and both doshas have classical exceptions. A low score can still be approved if the rest of both charts is strong.

Gun milan score chart

Score out of 36 What it means traditionally What astrologers usually say
0–17 Below the minimum Look carefully at both full charts before deciding
18–20 Just acceptable Fine if there's no major dosha and both charts are steady
21–24 Average to good Usually approved
25–28 Good A comfortable match by guna
29–32 Very good Strong Moon compatibility
33–36 Excellent Rare; still check Nadi, Bhakoot and Manglik

Is 18 gunas enough for marriage?

Yes, by tradition 18 is the pass mark, more than half of 36. What matters more is where the points were lost. Losing Nadi (8) and Bhakoot (7) together costs 15 points, and astrologers take it more seriously than losing the smaller kootas.

What is Nadi dosha?

Each nakshatra belongs to one of three nadis: adi (vata), madhya (pitta) or antya (kapha). If both partners have the same nadi, Nadi koota scores 0 of 8. That is Nadi dosha, traditionally linked with health and children.

Common exceptions that cancel Nadi dosha:

  • Same Moon sign but different nakshatras.
  • Same nakshatra but different Moon signs.
  • Same nakshatra but different padas (quarters), in many traditions.
  • The Moon-sign lords of the two charts are the same or friendly, according to several texts.

What is Bhakoot dosha?

Bhakoot looks at how far apart the two Moon signs are. Certain distances score 0 of 7:

  • 6–8 (shadashtak): the signs are 6th and 8th from each other.
  • 9–5 (nav-pancham): 9th and 5th.
  • 2–12 (dwi-dwadash): 2nd and 12th.

Common exceptions: the two Moon-sign lords are the same planet (for example, Aries and Scorpio, both ruled by Mars), or they are natural friends.

What should I do if my gun milan score is low?

  1. Check the calculation. Re-enter both birth times and places. An AM/PM error changes everything.
  2. See which kootas failed. A low score from small kootas matters less than losing Nadi or Bhakoot.
  3. Check for cancellations of Nadi and Bhakoot dosha.
  4. Look beyond guna: the 7th house, Venus, Jupiter, navamsa and Manglik status. See kundli matching explained.
  5. Avoid fear-based remedies. If someone insists on an expensive puja to "fix" a score, get a second opinion.

Why do different apps show different gun milan scores?

The tables are standard, so differences almost always come from input: a different birth time, a place with the wrong time zone, or a Moon that changed nakshatra close to the birth time. A few apps apply Nadi and Bhakoot exceptions and show an "adjusted" score. Check whether yours does.

Frequently asked questions

Is 20 gunas good for marriage?

20 is above the traditional minimum of 18 and is considered acceptable, as long as there is no uncancelled Nadi or Bhakoot dosha and the Manglik status is compatible.

Is 28 gunas a good match?

Yes. 28 of 36 is in the "good" range. Still check that the points lost don't include Nadi or Bhakoot.

What is the highest gun milan score?

36 of 36, which is rare. It shows strong Moon compatibility by tradition, but astrologers still check the rest of both charts.

Can a marriage succeed with less than 18 gunas?

Many do. Guna milan is one traditional factor. Astrologers routinely approve low-scoring matches when doshas are cancelled and both charts are strong, and families increasingly weigh the couple's own understanding above the score.
